Yemen: The Bureau’s investigation explained

Covert US strikes against alleged militants in Yemen escalated during the Arab Spring, and are now at the same rate as the CIA’s controversial drone campaign in Pakistan, a new study by the Bureau shows.

The research, published today with London’s Daily Telegraph and Al Jazeera English, reveals that at least 26 US military strikes have now taken place in the volatile Arab nation. The strikes have killed hundreds of alleged militants linked to the regional Al Qaeda franchise, along with at least 54 civilians.

75% of US attacks have taken place since May 2011, during the Arab Spring. In March 2012 alone, there have been at least five strikes by US forces, compared with three CIA drone strikes in Pakistan.
